Our Mission and Activities

As the national competence centre for financial instruments, the NRB complements the range of financial products offered by commercial banks and helps address market gaps where access to financial resources may be limited. The NRB’s activities are built on the long-term sustainability of financial instruments designed to support businesses, regional development and public infrastructure.
The NRB primarily provides:

  • guarantees and preferential loans for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), financed through state budget resources, European Union funds and regional resources;
  • preferential loans supporting the development of regional, municipal and local infrastructure;
  • advisory services focused on energy efficiency and public infrastructure projects.

Equity and quasi-equity support is delivered through National Development Investment (NRI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the NRB.

NRI’s mission is to promote public and private investment through equity and quasi- equity financial instruments. The company fulfils this mission by managing financial instruments and fund of funds structures on behalf of public sector managing authorities acting as investors.

History

The NRB was established on 28 January 1992 as the Czech-Moravian Guarantee and Development Bank (ČMZRB). Since its inception, the NRB has focused primarily on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises through guarantees and preferential loans. In the years that followed, the NRB expanded its activities to include financing for housing development and municipal infrastructure projects, and the NRB also served as an intermediary for infrastructure loans provided by the European Investment Bank.

Following the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union in 2004, the NRB assumed responsibility for managing financial instruments funded by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), enabling the NRB to support a broader range of beneficiaries and investment areas.

On 1 September 2021, the institution was renamed the National Development Bank (NRB), reflecting its expanded role in supporting the Czech economy.
